Consistent Tense

Consistent tense means using the same verb tense whenever possible within a sentence or a paragraph. As you write, avoid shifting from one tense to another--for example, from present to past--without a good reason for doing so.

Example:

He dances beautifully, and the audience watches intently.

He danced beautifully, and the audience watched intently.
